The star Lionel Messi was voted the best footballer in the world, although former teammates did not vote for him.

Argentinian striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Milan did not give his vote to Messi, nor did Samuel Eto'o, currently wearing the jersey of Inter Milan.

Messi did not receive votes from Real Madrid duo Iker Casillas and Cristiano Ronaldo. Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand cast his vote for Wesley Sneijder.

Interestingly, if the winner had been decided only by the votes of journalists, the top three would have been completely different - first place would go to Dutchman Sneijder, second to Andres Iniesta, and third to Xavi.
