European top clubs in 2009 together suffered losses reaching 1.2 billion euros, UEFA announces.

According to UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino, the revenues of 733 teams from the Old Continent increased by 4.8 percent compared to 2008, reaching 11.7 billion, but expenses increased by almost a tenth - to 12.9 billion euros.

To push clubs to live "within their means," UEFA will require from the 2014-2015 season that expenses match revenues, otherwise teams risk being removed from European cup competitions. The next few years will be left as a transitional period, during which requirements will gradually increase until they reach the set threshold.
