Amsterdam has rejected a €15 million offer for striker Luis Suarez and is demanding a much higher sum.
One of the English club executives, Damien Comolli, traveled to the Netherlands on Monday to continue negotiations.
"We will wait until the offer is more respectful than this," an "Ajax" representative told BBC. "We want to keep Luis - at least until the end of the season, and preferably until his contract expires."
He added: "If you compare €15 million to other deals, it is obvious that this is a significantly low amount. Suarez is a top-level striker who also provides many assists."
Suarez himself does not hide the fact that he would like to move to the English Premier League: "I used to think that the style of football played there did not match mine. However, I saw Carlos Tevez in the 'Boca' and 'Corinthians' teams, and I never imagined he could become such a star in England.
"Therefore, I believe that I can successfully compete there as well. That kind of football suits me."
