Ancelotti: we must give Torres time © EuroFootball.com

London strategist Carlo Ancelotti defended the team's newcomer Fernando Torres after the defeat to "Liverpool".

The Spaniard, who cost 58 million euros, made his debut for the capital's team, but played lacklusterly and was substituted in the second half.

"I made the substitution because he needed it after a tough week," the Italian said. "Fernando is experienced, has confidence in himself, and wanted to play. We need to give him time to adapt, but I don't think it will take long."

Although "Chelsea" boasted an impressive trio of attackers - Torres, Didier Drogba, and Nicolas Anelka, the hosts hardly created any scoring opportunities.

"The problem is not that Torres played - he put in a lot of work on the field," Ancelotti said. "We couldn't find any free spaces because 'Liverpool' defended excellently. We played too slowly."
