As the match was coming to an end, Bafetimbi Gomis equalized the score and gave hope to Lyon against Real Madrid before the return leg - the duel in France ended in a 1-1 draw.
Before the break, Gomis missed a great opportunity when he hit well over the goal after a pass from the edge to Iker Casillas, while on the other side of the field in the second half Cristiano Ronaldo hit the post with a penalty shot.
Soon after, Real defender Sergio Ramos shook the goal frame, and after his attempt the ball bounced off the crossbar, but in the 65th minute an important goal was scored on the opponents' field - former Lyon forward Karim Benzema, who had replaced the sluggish Emmanuel Adebayor a few moments earlier, played a one-two with Cristiano Ronaldo and stabbed the ball into the net from close range, piercing the entire French defense.
Although it seemed that Real would achieve their first victory in history against Lyon and come much closer to the quarterfinals, Gomis found himself in the right place at the right time in the 83rd minute and equalized the score.
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti can breathe a little easier - his Italian proteges, who have been heavily criticized lately, easily defeated Copenhagen 2-0 away and took a big step towards the quarterfinals.
The visitors had several chances to score and took the lead in the 17th minute when Nicolas Anelka sent the ball into the net after a mistake by Jesper Gronkjaer.
The experienced Frenchman doubled the lead after the break, receiving a precise pass from Frank Lampard and defeating Copenhagen's goalkeeper Johan Wiland with a shot to the ground.
It is worth noting that Ancelotti tested a tactical scheme in this match, in which two forwards made up the attacking line - Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Torres. Although the Spaniard, who cost 58 million euros, played the full 90 minutes and was close to scoring several times, he failed to make his mark in his third game for the Chelsea team.
