Due to a shoulder injury, goalkeeper Shay Given will not be able to play for about three months.
The 34-year-old footballer has played only four matches this season and is now out of the lineup for a long time.
"It's the same injury that Shay underwent last year, so I think surgery will be needed," said Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini.
England's Joe Hart did not give up the main Manchester team goalkeeper position to Given.
