Serbia and Montenegro's team striker Savo Milošević says he was shocked by the decision to start last weekend's Spanish championship match against a team.
Just an hour and a half before the start of the match, it was revealed that the 8-month-old daughter of the team's defender Marco Caneiro had suddenly died.
Milošević is convinced that the match should have been postponed and criticized the match referee for stating that there was no reason to interrupt the match.
"I am totally convinced that in such circumstances the match should not have been played," said the former and striker. "Perhaps we [footballers] are considered modern gladiators, but playing that match was madness. I understand that for people, like myself, football means a lot, but comparing football to human life..."
"I read in newspapers that the referee said that the only reason to interrupt a match is in case of violence or a similar situation. But what could be a greater reason than human life? I don't understand it," the Serb wondered.
"I don't know who is responsible for those decisions, but playing a match when a player's daughter dies just before it - makes no sense, I don't even know what to say. All I can do is empathize with Caneiro and his family. It was a terrible day for him. I myself have two daughters and I understand very well how he feels," the footballer sympathized with his colleague.
