Kolo Toure was found to have taken a banned substance in his body because he drank a weight loss pill meant for his wife, according to London strategist Arsene Wenger.
The 29-year-old African is currently suspended, as an investigation is ongoing.
Former coach Wenger spoke to his former player Toure and later told journalists: "He wants to regulate his weight, as he has some problems. But Kolo is definitely very honest, always spending time at home with his family."
Toure faces sanctions ranging from a warning to a two-year disqualification.
