Former French national team midfielder, 34-year-old Emmanuel Petit, has decided to end his professional career. This decision of the footballer was influenced by a serious knee injury, after which he was unable to recover.
The footballer made up his mind just before Christmas, when it became clear to him that he would not be able to fully recover and return to professional sports. Petit has not played in professional matches since last summer when he was released from the club.
"Right before Christmas, when I found out that I would not be able to fully recover, I realized that it was all over," the footballer said. "It's like a little death. Overall, I am proud of my career. The only regret is that, like Marco van Basten or Glenn Hoddle, I had to end my career due to injury."
E. Petit was an important player for the French national team during the victorious 1998 World Cup. He also managed to score one of the three (last) goals in the final match against Brazil. During his club career, he represented Monaco for 9 years, later played for clubs such as Arsenal and Barcelona, and his last club as a player was Chelsea.
