Although the referee initially awarded a penalty kick on the edge of the penalty area, after consulting with the assistant referee Kevin Friend, he changed his decision and pointed to the 11-meter mark. Despite the hosts' protests, Dirk Kuyt converted the penalty kick and put Liverpool ahead.
This decision ultimately determined the outcome of the match - "Sunderland" could not recover, and "Liverpool" had a chance to double their lead in the 77th minute when the club's newcomer Luis Suarez scored from a sharp angle inside the penalty area.
After this victory, "Liverpool" (45 points) secured sixth place in the league table and narrowed the gap from London's "Tottenham" in fifth place to four points. However, the London team has played one match less.
Meanwhile, "Sunderland" is in ninth place.
