Mourinho: I was almost signed a contract with the English national team © EuroFootball.com

Madrid coach Jose Mourinho revealed that in 2007 he was almost ready to take over the reins of the England national team, but ultimately decided to stay in club football.

In an interview with the newspaper "L'Equipe", Mourinho said: "In a matter of hours, I was supposed to replace Steve McClaren. I was very close to signing a contract with the England national team."

"But at the last moment, I started to think - 'I will coach the national team, play one game a month, and spend the rest of the time in the office or watching other matches. Then I would have to wait until summer to participate in the World or European Championship?' No, that's not for me."

"In the end, I decided to wait for a job suitable for me in a good club, where the challenges would motivate me. It was Inter Milan," Mourinho said.
