The club will have to cope without the injured captain Steven Gerrard until the end of the season.
The England international resumed training last week after a groin operation performed in March, but the problem recurred last Friday.
"We still can't accurately say what the problem is," said coach Kenny Dalglish. "We will wait for a precise answer from the specialists, but Steven will not play this season."
It is worth mentioning that a few days ago defender Daniel Agger dropped out of the lineup until autumn. His teammate Glen Johnson will also be out for a month.
