After leading Birmingham club for just nine months, Gerard Houllier is resigning from his duties.
The 63-year-old manager was unable to lead the team in the last few matches due to heart problems.
After consulting with doctors, the decision was made that the Frenchman needed to rest.
"I am very disappointed that I will not have the opportunity to work with Aston Villa team," said Houllier. "My health has improved recently, so I hope to return to football after resting for a few months."
In the Premier League, Aston Villa finished in ninth place last season.
