They acquired defender Wes Brown for an undisclosed amount. The 31-year-old footballer signed a four-year contract.
Brown made his debut for the Manchester team in 1998 and played 361 matches during this time.
"We are very pleased that a player of this level, with a lot of experience, has joined the team," said Sunderland strategist Steve Bruce.
Last season, Brown rarely made it into the main "Man Utd" lineup, as he faced tough competition from the Da Silva brothers, Fabio and Rafael.
In the near future, Sunderland hopes to also sign another experienced "Man Utd" defender: John O'Shea. Following in the footsteps of these two players could be defender Danny Gibson, but he is also of interest to Newcastle.
