Chronic road trauma forced Fabio Cannavaro to end his impressive 19-year footballer career.
The 37-year-old Italian admitted that making this decision was not easy, but he does so under strong recommendation from doctors.
"I am very saddened, because football was my whole life," said Cannavaro, who recently wore the jersey of Al Ahli in the United Arab Emirates.
In 2006, Cannavaro not only triumphed in the World Cup with the Italian national team, but was also named the FIFA Player of the Year.
The star, who defended the honor of his country for Real Madrid, Juventus, and Inter Milan, was capped 136 times - a record that no other Italian has managed to surpass to this day.
