Cameroon's national team and forward Samuel Eto'o was named the African Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. The award ceremony took place in Durban, South Africa, but the player did not attend personally as he had to play in a charity match to support the victims of the tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia.

The 23-year-old Cameroonian won this title last year while still representing "RCD Mallorca," but since moving to "Barcelona," he demonstrated an impressive performance by becoming the top scorer in the Spanish league, hitting 17 goals.

Eto'o earned 116 points in the voting, while his closest competitors Didier Drogba ("Chelsea") and Jay-Jay Okocha ("Bolton Wanderers") collected 90 and 63 points respectively.

Before the voting, some experts believed that the title should go to Nigerian Okocha, who was named the best player of the 2004 African Cup of Nations, so the election results were a bitter disappointment for Nigerian football fans.

The best young African Player of the Year was "Internazionale" striker Obafemi Martins, while the Goal of the Year award went to one of the two goals scored by "Porto" against Manchester United in the Champions League.

During the ceremony, the past highly acclaimed Liberian national team player and "Paris Saint-Germain" and "AC Milan" star George Weah was also honored with the title of African Legend.
