Bob Bradley, who has been coaching the United States national team for four and a half years, has been relieved of his duties.
"We believe that the time has come for changes," said US Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati. "It is always difficult to make such decisions, especially considering how much we respect Bob."
The team led by the 53-year-old coach reached the round of 16 at last year's World Cup, where they lost to Ghana's eleven after extra time.
This summer, the Americans lost 2-4 to Mexico in the Gold Cup final, and their FIFA ranking dropped to its lowest position since 2006 - 30th.
German Jurgen Klinsmann is considered the most likely candidate to replace Bradley.
