Returning to the highest league in Italy, the Bergamo club "Atalanta" will start the season with minus 6 points, and team captain Cristiano Doni has been disqualified from professional football for three and a half years.
Such penalties were imposed by the Italian Football Federation after a long investigation into match-fixing.
It is speculated that both "Atalanta" and Doni will file appeals, but for the 38-year-old veteran, this will likely mean the end of his career in any case.
Former captain of Roma's "Lazio", Giuseppe Signori, who ended his career, will not be able to engage in football-related activities for five years, and "Benevento" goalkeeper Marco Paoloni has been suspended.
"Benevento" have been deducted nine points, "Ascoli" - six, and "Piacenza" - four points.
