Spanish football season start could be delayed by footballers' strike © EuroFootball.com

The Spanish Footballers Association (AFE) announced that players from the top two leagues in the country are going on strike.

According to AFE's leader Luis Rubiales, the 2011-2012 season will start at least two weeks later than planned.

The reason for this is that AFE and the Professional Football League did not reach a collective agreement regarding a larger support fund for players who are not receiving salaries from their financially troubled clubs.

Over 100 top league footballers, including Spanish national team captain Iker Casillas and Barcelona defender Carles Puyol, supported this decision.

The season in Spain is supposed to start on August 20th.
