The season in Spain is likely to start later than planned - the footballers' union and league officials failed to agree on calling off the strike.
Players say they will not step onto the field unless their demanded point about the conditions of salary payment in case the club faces financial problems is included in the new collective agreement.
It is aimed to create a special fund to cover debts. Currently, the top two leagues owe around 50 million euros to a couple of hundred footballers. Additionally, they want teams failing to meet obligations to be punished with relegation to a lower division.
Meanwhile, the league wants the national team call-ups to be considered as vacations, and there is also a disagreement on who should own a player's commercial rights.
It is said that the first strike in Spain since 1984 could last for about two rounds.
The first matches of the new season are scheduled for this weekend - on August 20. Interestingly, some games this season will take place much earlier than usual - at 12 noon, but neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona players will step onto the field at that time due to "other commitments."
