Rescuers had to pull former England national football team player Trevor Steven out of the river on Sunday, as he heroically saved his dog.

The 47-year-old man, who had represented Liverpool's Everton and Glasgow Rangers clubs, jumped into the water when a German shepherd named Mac fell from a steep slope into the river, reports the Daily Mirror.

Musician John McLaughlin, who was visiting Steven's home, called for help. After half an hour, rescuers arrived by helicopter and pulled the Englishman, who was holding the dog in the water, out of the river.

"It was a shock to me. I had no other choice, as the current would have taken Mac further away. I acted instinctively," Steven said.
