Andre Villas Boas admitted that this season will likely be the last one at the London club for forward Nicolas Anelka.
The 32-year-old footballer's contract will expire next summer and most likely will not be renewed.
"We will take steps and offer a contract, but Nico himself has to make a decision," said coach Villas Boas. "I don't think he will want to stay."
When asked if the Frenchman expressed a desire to leave, the strategist candidly replied: "Yes."
The capital team is not lacking in forwards: the most expensive player in Great Britain, Fernando Torres, veteran Didier Drogba, young Belgian Romelu Lukaku, as well as promising Daniel Sturridge.
Villas Boas did not comment on whether 33-year-old Drogba will remain in the team, whose contract will also expire in June.
This season in the English Premier League, Anelka scored one goal in 4 matches. Last season, he managed to score six goals in 32 matches.
