Just five points in seven European Championship qualifying matches won by the Bulgarian national team coach Lothar Matthaeus has been dismissed from his duties.
Although it was agreed that the legendary German would lead the national team in the World Cup qualifiers, losses to England and Switzerland changed the Bulgarians' opinion.
"There are many reasons to dismiss Lothar, and it's not just about the bad results," said Borislav Mihailov, president of the Bulgarian Football Union. "There was pressure and negativity felt in the team, so changes were needed."
It was added that the coach did not receive any financial compensation.
Instead of Matthaeus, Mihail Madanski, who temporarily led the youth team, will take over.
