Unsuccessful changes shook the Lithuanian national team that appeared in the European Championship qualifiers. After a devastating loss to the Czech Republic, head coach Raimondas Žutautas resigned.
During the press conference, the specialist was not willing to answer journalists' questions and made a brief statement.
"We did not gather as many points as we wanted and planned before the cycle. I want to thank the men for their fight, the fans who supported us in difficult times, even when it was cold," said Žutautas. "My work with the national team is finished."
"We will see who will replace me. In any case, I wish that coach success."
It should be reminded that Žutautas took over the job last summer, replacing Portuguese Jose Couceiro. The country's football federation tasked the coach with earning 12-13 points and fighting for the second place in the group, but they failed to come close to that result.
The Lithuanians, in Group I with five points, which they earned by defeating the Czech Republic and playing draw with Scotland and Liechtenstein, remained in second-to-last place. The team scored four goals and conceded 13.
The UEFA A licensed coach had previously worked as an assistant coach at Russia's Vladikavkaz "Alania" and also made a significant contribution to the rebirth of Gargždai "Banga."
