Rooney will miss as many as three European Championship final stage matches (VIDEO) © EuroFootball.com

The England national team will have to cope without one of their leaders, Wayne Rooney, at next year's European Championship. The striker was given a red card in the qualifying match against Montenegro and suspended for three games, therefore missing the entire group stage.

Such sanctions were imposed because Rooney lost control of his emotions and elbowed opponent defender Miodrag Dzudovic in the back. The referee immediately sent him off the field.

As a result, the Englishman was automatically suspended for one match, but the expert commission significantly increased the punishment. The English Football Association plans to appeal in the near future.

A few days ago, national team coach Fabio Capello stated that the loss of Rooney will force him to look for alternatives, so the future of the "Man Utd" star in the national team in upcoming matches is uncertain.
