The police have launched an investigation into information that emerged in the public domain that London defender John Terry racially abused representative Anton Ferdinand.

Chelsea captain categorically denied that he insulted a black opponent team player during Sunday's Premier League match.

"We confirm that we have information about an incident that took place on October 23 related to racial hatred. Local officials will start an investigation," the police statement said.

There is no shortage of videos online allegedly confirming these allegations. Terry himself defended himself: "I could never say anything like that, so it saddens me that people think differently."
