Samuel Eto'o defends his decision to move to Russia to play football and insists that this country is the future of football.
The 30-year-old footballer left Milan's Inter last summer and moved to Makhachkala's Anzhi for 28 million euros. The Dagestan club has committed to paying the Cameroonian player 10 million euros per year.
Many criticized Eto'o for choosing Anzhi just for the money, but in an interview with CNN, the striker spoke differently: "I don't care what others think. I believe that everyone wants to work and earn as much as they are worth. The offer from Makhachkala matched my level of talent - I receive what they think I am worth."
Club president Suleiman Kerimov said he wants to assemble a strong team and considers me as its leader. It excited me because I always thought of myself only as a professional footballer, not a leader of the entire project. This new challenge is very important to me.
"I am glad that throughout my career I had the opportunity to play in different countries, where I could learn something new. It makes me a better person."
He added: "Practically every day I receive messages or calls from famous footballers asking if there are opportunities to come to Russia. This is because the future of football is in this country."
In 7 matches in the Russian league, Eto'o scored four goals. In the league table, Anzhi occupies the eighth position after 28 rounds.
