The coach of the Lithuanian national team would like to be the Hungarian Laszlo Csaba, but so far it has not been possible to reach an agreement on the duration of the contract.
The former strategist of Edinburgh Hearts confirmed the information published on EuroFootball.com that he aims to replace the resigned Raimondas Žutautas.
"Csaba was in Lithuania. I did not negotiate, but I know that the general director (Julius Kvedaras - ed. note) talked to him. Probably you should ask him," said LFF president Liutauras Varanavičius to EuroFootball.com. "As far as I know, there has not been a final decision to reject or accept the offer."
This information was confirmed to the portal by Kvedaras himself: "We talked to Laszlo Csaba, he came to Lithuania, but he is certainly not the main candidate. When we review all the contenders, then we will give him an answer. Csaba presented his conditions, talked about how he imagines the work, left notes. We will inform him of our decision within two months. This option was very suitable for this coach, as his children are finishing their studies in Scotland."
According to Csaba, he would like a two-year contract with the possibility of extending it for a longer period.
The goal is to qualify for the European Championship
In talks with journalists from his country, Csaba insisted that a long-term contract is offered to him because the Lithuanian national team has the goal of qualifying for the 2016 European Championship to be held in France. This will be the first time that 24, not the usual 16, of the strongest European countries will participate.
Therefore, the current players of youth national teams should be used in the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup. He added that the game and results of youth teams do not impress him, so this could be an obstacle to achieving the set goals.
The Hungarian was among the candidates to become the coach before the 2012 European Championship qualifying tournament, but at that time the LFF chose Žutautas.
Colorful career
Starting his career at lower levels, Csaba took over at "Ferencvaros" in 2004, became the best Hungarian coach of the year, and soon was appointed as assistant to the Hungarian national team coach Lothar Matthaus.
Later, he worked with the "Sopron" team for just a few months, and from 2006 to 2008 he led the exotic Ugandan national team, which failed to qualify for the 2008 African Nations Cup only because of a worse goal difference.
Then Csaba turned to the UK and took over at the Edinburgh Hearts, owned by Lithuanian businessman Vladimir Romanov. With this club, the Hungarian coach finished third in the national championship and was named the best coach of the Scottish Premier League in 2009. However, in the following season, the performance of Hearts declined, and Laszlo was forced to step down.
Last season, the Hungarian coached Charleroi from Belgium, but due to poor results, he lost his job in March.
