Three quarterfinal matches took place on Monday. After them, two of the strongest French football division "Ligue 1" clubs, "Nice" and "Lyon", were eliminated by weaker lower league teams. Similarly, the matches on Wednesday also unfolded, after which three more "Ligue 1" teams were eliminated from further competition.
One of the most unexpected results was recorded in Lille, where the local "Lille", who recently fought with "Lyon" for the first place in the championship, lost 3-1 in extra time to the lower division "Grenoble" club. "Lille" took the lead after the 32nd minute goal by Nicolas Fauvergue, but at the beginning of the second half, "Grenoble" managed to equalize the score. The main match ended 1-1, but in extra time, the visitors left no chance for the "Lille" team, scoring two goals and taking the victory.
A similar fate almost awaited the previous season's UEFA Champions League finalists "Monaco", who failed to overcome another "Ligue 1" team "Rennes" in regulation time. The main match ended 0-0, but in extra time, the victory was snatched from Monaco by Argentinean Javier Saviola, who scored in the 94th minute, defeating the opponents' goalkeeper.
We will not see the capital's "P.S.G" club in the quarterfinals either, as they acknowledged the superiority of "Auxerre" with a score of 3-2, despite leading 0-2 in this match. It should be noted that "P.S.G" has already been eliminated from the League Cup tournament, and in the national championship currently occupies only the 12th place.
The only "Ligue 1" club that managed to defeat their opponents convincingly yesterday was "Sochaux", who crushed the lower league "Albi" team 0-3 away. However, it is worth mentioning that all three goals towards the "Albi" net were scored in the last 15 minutes of the match.
