Guus Hiddink will leave the position of the coach of the Turkish national team in the nearest future.
The 65-year-old specialist from the Netherlands failed to secure a ticket to the 2012 European Championship. In the qualification group, his players took second place, but in the play-offs they lost to Croatia with an overall score of 0-3.
Before the return match against Croatia, the Turkish media announced that the contract with Hiddink, valid for another year, would be terminated. He will receive a solid compensation.
"This could have been my last game leading the Turkish national team," said Hiddink on Tuesday evening. "I definitely do not regret taking on the job. I worked for the future of Turkish football, but probably I will step down. I want to rest. I have not yet thought about a new team, it is too early to do that."
After the first match, which Turkey lost at home by 0-3, the coach admitted that he did not believe his players would be able to make a comeback. They failed to create a miracle - in the return match, the Croatians achieved a satisfactory result of 0-0.
It is said that Hiddink is being eyed by the financially-strong Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, as well as Ajax from Amsterdam, which is offering him a position as one of the directors.
