The vice president of the Catalan club, Josep Maria Bartomeu, expressed hope that negotiations with the Frenchman are progressing successfully and soon it will be possible to announce that all formalities have been agreed upon.
"We have almost agreed on everything, but negotiations are still ongoing. There are no significant differences between our positions and I am sure that soon the signatures will be put down," - one of the leaders of Barcelona is quoted by the Catalan newspaper "Sport.es".
The current 32-year-old footballer's contract with the Catalan club expires next summer.
The feeling that everything will indeed end successfully was reinforced on Sunday by Abidal himself.
The Frenchman, who arrived from Lyon's Olympique in 2007, reiterated to journalists once again that he would like to finish his career at the Catalan club: "I have said many times that I want to continue playing for Barca. Negotiations are ongoing and they are not easy, but I am convinced that we will reach an agreement."
