The Iranian Football Federation has suspended two players for celebrating a goal "immorally" in a match broadcasted by the state television to millions of viewers.
"Persepolis" defender Mohammad Nosrati will not be able to play for ten months, while his teammate Sheys Rezaei will be suspended for twice as long. In addition, the players will have to pay $30,000 each as they violated "public morality".
These sanctions were imposed for Rezaei jumping on Nosrati's back in celebration of a precise shot by their teammate, and Nosrati inexplicably grabbing him by the buttocks. Both denied intending to offend anyone with their actions.
"Persepolis" management had previously reduced the salaries of both offenders by 15%.
The 30-year-old Nosrati has represented Iran's national team for over a decade and scored a crucial goal that led to qualification for the 2006 World Cup finals.
An odd celebration by the Iranians.
