Varanavičius: the most realistic candidates to coach the national team - Skarbalius and Ivanauskas © EuroFootball.com

The president of the Lithuanian Football Federation, Liutauras Varanavičius, refers to Aurelijus Skarbalius and Valdas Ivanauskas as the most realistic contenders to take over the national team.

He also denied that former national team head coach Raimondas Žutautas, who has not ruled out a return, is among the candidates. The final decision is expected to be made at the beginning of next year.

"I don't understand why Raimondas Žutautas is being mentioned, as he was not on the list of candidates. It was discussed in the committee. No one is talking about R. Žutautas as the head coach of the national team. I think the idea that we don't want to rule him out as a coach was misunderstood. No one has said that R. Žutautas will be the head coach of the national team," Varanavičius told the portal lrytas.lt.

He added: "The most realistic candidates are Aurelijus Skarbalius and Valdas Ivanauskas. We will negotiate with them, look at the conditions, and then make a decision."

Skarbalius is currently coaching the famous Danish club "Brondby," but has signed a short-term contract that will be reviewed after the new year. The specialist himself has not ruled out the possibility of returning to work in his homeland. Meanwhile, Ivanauskas, who previously coached teams like Edinburgh Hearts, FBK Kaunas, and others, has not been coaching for some time.

According to "EuroFootball.com," among the foreign candidates interested in this opportunity besides Hungarian Csaba Laszlo is German Lothar Matthäus.
