28th round: Unexpected failures of leaders © EuroFootball.com

On Friday and Saturday, nine games of the 28th round of matches were played in the French "Ligue 1" championship. One more game will be played on Sunday, where "Marseille" will face Saint-Eteinne.

As announced earlier, the defending champions "Lyon" suffered an unexpected defeat in this round, losing 0-1 to "Caen", who have been promoted to the highest division this season. This was only the second defeat for "Lyon" in the "Ligue 1" championship this season.

Following the leaders' failure, third-placed "Lille" did not take advantage for the umpteenth time this season, losing 3-1 to a managerless "Bastia" on Saturday. It is worth mentioning that "Bastia" coach François Ciccolini was suspended for two matches this week for racism.

"Monaco" and "Auxerre" also failed to close the gap on "Lyon". Monaco played a goalless draw with "Metz", remaining in fourth place, while Auxerre had to admit the superiority of "Lens" with a 3-1 defeat, holding onto the 5th place in the table.

"Rennes" also maintained their position after this round, crushing "Sochaux", the holders of the League Cup, 3-0 at home. It is worth mentioning that three red cards were shown in this match - 2 of them to "Sochaux" players and one to Cyril Jeunechamp representing "Rennes".

Edgaras Jankauskas' "Nice" suffered another defeat in the championship, losing 0-1 away to "Toulouse". The Lithuanian national team striker, still recovering from injuries, was once again not registered for the match.
