Steve Bruce was released from the position of head coach on Wednesday.

The specialist, who won only twice in 13 matches, became the first to lose his job this season in the English Premier League.

"My job is to represent the club's interests, but I want to assure you that it was not an easy decision," said Sunderland chairman Ellis Short. "Unfortunately, the results were not good enough, so I believe it is the right time to take action."

Eric Black, Bruce's assistant, will temporarily replace him. Favorites to take over the helm include Martin O'Neill, as well as mentions of Mark Hughes, Rafael Benitez, and Guus Hiddink.

Currently, Sunderland is in 16th place in the championship.
