The 48-year-old specialist stepped down from London's Fulham club in June, claiming that he wanted to gain more experience. Now he is aiming to replace Steve Bruce, who was dismissed on Wednesday.
According to reports, Hughes is interested in the offer from Sunderland, but specific negotiations have not started yet. Alongside him, names of other specialists such as Martin O'Neill, Rafael Benitez, and Guus Hiddink are also mentioned.
In the English championship, Sunderland has only secured two victories in 13 matches.
