At the age of 58, one of the most famous Brazilian footballers of the last century, Socrates, passed away on Sunday.

The legendary midfielder was in a hospital in Sao Paulo, where he was admitted after a gastrointestinal infection. Special devices were keeping him alive since Saturday.

Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Sousa Vieira de Oliveira, who stood out for his excellent vision on the field for the Brazilian national team, played 60 matches and scored 22 goals. He had health problems before - in the months of August and September, he had to be hospitalized due to gastrointestinal bleeding.

The former player admitted that he could not solve the problems caused by alcohol consumption, which haunted him during his career. He also smoked a lot.

Socrates spent almost his entire career in his homeland, representing "Botafogo", "Corinthians", "Flamengo" and "Santos". However, he played one season for the Italian club "Fiorentina".

Socrates ended his career in 1989.
