Spanish Primera and Champions League winner "Barcelona" is among the contenders for the prestigious "Laureus" Team of the Year award.
Established in 1999, the "Laureus" awards are presented annually to outstanding athletes, clubs, and national teams by the founders of these awards - the automotive industry giant "Daimler AG" and the Swiss holding and luxury goods company "Richemont."
In addition to the Catalan club, the contenders for the "Laureus" Team of the Year award also include the Uruguayan national men's football team that triumphed in the Copa America tournament, the Japanese women's national football team that became world champions, the New Zealand men's rugby team known worldwide as "All Blacks", the England and India cricket teams, NBA champions "Dallas Mavericks", Formula 1 Constructors' Championship winners "Red Bull" team, and the American football Super Bowl champions from Wisconsin state, "Green Bay Packers."
"Barcelona" was also among the nominees for the Laureus Team of the Year in 2006, 2007, and 2010, but has not won this award so far. In 2006, the winner was the Formula 1 team "Renault", in 2007 - the Italian men's national football team, and this year another Formula 1 team, "Brawn GP", triumphed in the voting.
In 2007, "Barcelona" received the "Laureus" Spirit of Sport award.
The new owners of the "Laureus" awards will be announced on February 6, 2012, during the ceremony held in London.
