The future of Aurelijus Skarbalius in the team should be clear by the beginning of January at the latest.

Will he remain as assistant coach?

The 38-year-old Lithuanian unexpectedly took over the reins of one of the most prominent Danish clubs at the end of October, even though he had planned to start working as the head coach assistant since 2012. The impetus for this was the decision of "Brondby" leaders to dismiss the strategist Henry Jensen.

In six matches led by the famous Lithuanian footballer, "Brondby" won one game, played three draws, and lost twice. There were rumors that Skarbalius had signed a short-term contract and would not remain in the coaching position - he would supposedly be offered to help the newly appointed specialist.

"I wouldn't want to give a specific date when we will make a decision, but time is running out, so we are trying to sort out everything immediately," said the club's sports director Ole Bjuras. "The coach will be appointed at the beginning of January when the players return after the holidays. I can guarantee that."

A few days ago, Skarbalius hinted that he did not expect to stay in his current position: "I accepted the invitation from "Brondby" because I wanted more responsibility. However, this responsibility also comes with working not as the head coach, but in the coaching staff."

The results with the club did not disappoint

Talking about the Lithuanian’s results, Bjuras was positive: "Out of five matches in the national championship, we managed to get points in four of them. It is important to remember in what uncomfortable situation Auri found himself. The period when he took up work was not easy, and there were tough matches against OB, "Kobenhavn", "Horsens".

Currently, there is a winter break in the Danish championship, and the season will continue from March 4th.

Another career milestone - the national team?

It should be noted that Skarbalius is mentioned as one of the most realistic candidates to become the new coach of the Lithuanian national team. However, federation leaders and the specialist himself emphasized that he would not be able to combine two jobs if he remained the head coach of "Brondby".

"First of all, he needs to dig in and help "Brondby" rise from the 10th place in the Danish championship. This position is not typical for such a famous team, so we can only wish Skarbalius luck. If something went wrong for him, of course, I would contact him," said LFF general director Julius Kvedaras.

Besides Skarbalius, the national team would like to be coached by Valdas Ivanauskas, Liudas Rumbutis, Algimantas Liubinskas, and Arminas Narbekovas. Among foreign specialists - Csaba Laszlo and Lothar Matthaus.
