The Italian police have detained 17 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal activities betting on the results of football matches.
Among those arrested is former Italy national team and Atalanta defender Cristiano Doni.
During operations carried out in several cities, the detained individuals are suspected of maintaining close ties with criminal groups from Singapore and Eastern Europe.
"This is not the end, but only the beginning," said prosecutor Roberto Di Martino. "We hope to clean up the beautiful sport of football from such things."
These actions continue the investigation that began at the beginning of the year, which has already yielded results: several footballers, including Doni, have been suspended. "Atalanta" club, which is competing in the Serie A championship this season, has had six points deducted.
