London strategist Arsene Wenger admitted that his players had no right to lose to the club.
After the match in which the Gunners acknowledged the opponents' superiority with a score of 1-2, the Frenchman also criticized the fans who booed his decision to send Andrei Arshavin onto the field.
Their dissatisfaction was caused by the fact that actively playing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was sitting on the bench, while the Russian thrown onto the field does not impress with good performance this season. It later turned out that he was to blame for the opposing team's winning goal, as he failed to catch Antonio Valencia breaking through the flank.
"I have been working as a coach for thirty years and have made 50,000 substitutions, so I don't see the point in justifying each one," said Wenger. "I understand why the fans were disappointed, especially when the decision didn't go well, but Alex seemed tired in his game. Moreover, he was sick this week, while Arshavin is the captain of the Russian national team."
The specialist continued: "We are talking about an 18-year-old boy who started his first match in the starting lineup of the Premier League and is the captain of his country's national team. And you question such a substitution?"
Speaking about the tournament situation, Wenger was not optimistic: "We are in a difficult situation."
