Strategist Sir Alex Ferguson defends goalkeeper David de Gea, who is receiving more and more criticism.
In the summer, the Spaniard, who cost more than 20 million euros, has so far failed to establish himself in the main lineup and often gives way to Anders Lindegaard. Furthermore, on the field, he does not show reliable play.
Harsh words were spoken about him after Saturday's FA Cup match with Liverpool, during which the goalkeeper hesitated to come out and catch the ball during a corner kick, which ultimately ended with a precise header from Daniel Agger.
"Our players caused problems in a situation where the first goal was scored," said Ferguson. "They didn't leave enough space for de Gea to defend himself."
His colleague, striker Michael Owen, who is recovering from an injury, defended him: "Yes, this season he made a few mistakes, but from the way people talk, it seems like he's playing tragically. The problem is that when a label is stuck on, dirt sticks much easier. Every little mistake is observed as if under a magnifying glass."
And he added: "Other goalkeepers make the same mistakes, but they are not talked about."
