Pope Benedict XVI will soon receive an offer to become an honorary member of the Munich club, said president Uli Hoeness.
The Holy Father was born in Germany, in the town of Marktl, located 110 kilometers away from Munich. It is expected that he will agree to become one of the 174,000 members.
"If we just get a word, we will immediately offer him an honorary member position," Hoeness said to "Sport1."
84-year-old Joseph Ratzinger would not be the first pope with such status. His predecessor, Pope John Paul II, was an honorary member of Dortmund's "Borussia" and Gelsenkirchen's "Schalke" clubs.
