In the first half, there were few opportunities - perhaps the closest shot was from Glen Johnson, but the ball passed next to the post after the Liverpool defender's left-footed strike. On the other side of the field, the accuracy was lacking for Paul Scholes, who had controlled the ball longer for the Manchester United team.
As it turned out later, the crucial moments were in the first minutes after the break. Just over a minute played, after a corner kick, Jordan Henderson headed the ball, and Wayne Rooney sent it into the net from close range.
As if that wasn't enough, moments later Liverpool defender Jay Spearing made a fatal mistake by losing the ball near his penalty area, and Rooney took advantage of it calmly, disarming Reina for the second time.
With a safe advantage, the hosts did not make an effort to attack and made many passes in their own half. However, the visitors' hopes were revived in the 80th minute when Rio Ferdinand failed to clear danger near the goal and allowed Luis Suarez to reduce the lead from close range.
Nevertheless, Liverpool's efforts to equalize in the remaining time were in vain: David de Gea had to fend off only a dangerous long-range shot from Johnson.
