London strategist Andre Villas Boas insists that he made the right choice in the starting lineup in the first Champions League round of 16 match against Napoli.
The English club lost 1-3 in Italy and significantly complicated their situation in the fight for a spot in the quarterfinals. Some experts doubted the coach's decision to leave Ashley Cole, Michael Essien, and Frank Lampard on the bench.
Cole entered the field in the 12th minute as Jose Bosingwa got injured. Essien and Lampard played in the second half.
"You can have your opinion, but in my opinion, it was the best choice," Villas Boas said. "We will carefully analyze what we did wrong. We have things to fix. We certainly don't give up on our chances - 3-1 is not an impossible deficit."
"We need to solve our defensive issues. Concentration is not adequate. Without John Terry, we have conceded many goals," explained the specialist. "The opponents managed to score twice even though there were more defenders than attackers. If the organization were right, they wouldn't have scored."
