Today (Wednesday) the head coach of Ukraine, Oleg Blokhin, resigned from his position, stating that he cannot balance coaching the team with his work in the Ukrainian parliament.

The 52-year-old former Soviet Union and Dynamo Kyiv forward announced to his colleagues in the Ukrainian parliament that he sacrificed the coaching position for the parliamentary mandate.

Blokhin, voted the best European player in 1975, has been very successful in leading the Ukrainian national team, which is very close to qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany for the first time.

Ukraine, undefeated in the qualifying stage, is leading the second group with 14 points from six matches. The European champions, Greece, are trailing Ukraine by six points in second place.
