Lionel Messi became the first footballer to score five goals in a Champions League match.

The best player on the planet will go down in history after leading Barcelona to an impressive 7-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League round of 16 knockout match.

"I don't remember the last time I scored so many goals, so I am very happy," Messi said, who now has 49 goals in the Champions League. "It's really great to achieve such a result, but the most important thing is that we advanced to the next stage."

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola praised the 24-year-old player: "He is the best footballer of all time, surpassing everyone else. The numbers speak for themselves. One day he scored six goals. I am very lucky to have such a player in my team, so we need to take advantage of that."

In European cup competitions, only three other players have managed to score five goals in a single match.
