Due to the riots and the flaring up of the stadium, the derby between the "Panathinaikos" and "Olympiakos" clubs in Athens was interrupted.
The battle of the Greek giants was stopped with about 9 minutes left to play, when "Panathinaikos" fans started throwing pyrotechnic devices and clashed with the police. The referee made the decision due to the explosions that occurred right near the field.
There were also disturbances during halftime - the start of the second half was delayed by almost an hour, and the mood at the "Panathinaikos" stadium was not improved by the goal scored by the visitors in the 51st minute.
"This was not football. This day is one of the darkest in Greek football history," said "Panathinaikos" captain Kostas Katsouranis.
