On Wednesday, the Spanish Football Federation's Competition Committee held a meeting and decided to accept "Barcelona" club's appeal and revoke the yellow card given to Thiago Alcantara.
Last weekend, during the match between the Catalan team and "Mallorca", referee Miguel Angel Ayza Gamez issued a questionable decision in the second half - he showed a yellow card to "Barcos" defender for a handball. This was Thiago's second warning in the game, which led to a straight red card.
Video replays showed that the ball hit the defender's shoulder, so according to "Barcelona" representatives, the player did not break any rules and should not have been cautioned in that episode.
The Catalan club officially filed an appeal regarding the defender Carles Puyol, who was also punished in a similar situation.
Today, the Competition Committee examined "Barcelona's" complaint and acknowledged that the club's claims regarding the referee's questionable decision were justified.
The decision was made to revoke the second yellow card given to Thiago in the match against "Mallorca". This also means that the player should not have been sent off the field and will now avoid a one-match suspension, allowing him to play in the upcoming weekend match against Bilbao "Athletic" in La Liga.
The yellow card given to "Barcelona" captain C. Puyol will remain valid, and the Catalan club officially announced that they do not intend to file an additional complaint to the Appeals Committee.
