Former sports director Txiki Begiristain insists that in 2008 Jose Mourinho could have become the team's coach.

After an unsuccessful season, Frank Rijkaard was dismissed from his duties, and one of the main contenders to replace him was Mourinho. However, despite this, the club leaders ultimately chose Pep Guardiola, and the Portuguese later shook hands with Real Madrid.

"Pep was an amazing player who began his career in our youth team," said Begiristain. "That's why he had no trouble understanding the system and philosophy that was implemented. Mourinho could have come as well, we talked to him, but Guardiola knew best what Barcelona was all about. That was his advantage over Mourinho."

During this time, Guardiola won a total of 13 trophies, including two Champions League titles.
